Introduction:
Fontanafredda Briccotondo Barbera is a vibrant and expressive wine that captures the essence of the Langhe and Monferrato regions of Piedmont. Known for its balance of fruit and spice, this Barbera showcases the winery’s commitment to organic farming and sustainability while offering a rich and approachable wine.
Tasting Notes:
The nose is full of black fruit aromas, with prominent notes of blackberries and plums, accented by a touch of black pepper and cinnamon spice. On the palate, the wine is smooth with soft, sweet tannins and a tightly woven texture. The combination of fresh fruit character and crisp acidity provides a refreshing, well-rounded finish.
Winemaking & Aging:
- Fermentation: The grapes are fermented in stainless steel tanks at temperatures between 73-77°F for 6-7 days, with frequent pumping over.
- Malolactic Fermentation: After fermentation, the wine is transferred to concrete tanks for malolactic fermentation, which completes in December.
- Aging: The wine is aged in a mix of new Allier oak barrels and large Slavonian oak casks. After a few months of aging, it is lightly fined and bottled in late spring.
Terroir & Vineyards:
The grapes for this wine are sourced from vineyards across Monferrato and the Langhe, planted in calcareous, sand-rich marly soils. The vineyards are located at altitudes of 250-300 meters and are cultivated with high-density plantings of 5,000 vines per hectare.
Food Pairing:
This wine pairs beautifully with rich, savory dishes such as roasted meats, grilled vegetables, and aged cheeses. It is also an excellent match for pasta with rich sauces or charcuterie.
